The reef in Amed is under significant fishing pressure. The fish here are educated. They spook easily, they hold deep in structure, and they don't give you easy shots.

Hunting this reef builds the skills that transfer everywhere: breath control, stalking, patience, and shot placement under pressure.

If you've never spearfished before, our Learn to Spearfish course is a better starting point: it covers the fundamentals in a structured format before putting you in the water with a gun.

What's on the reef

The Amed reef holds a variety of species depending on the site and conditions. Most are in structure: under coral heads, in crevices, along wall faces. Finding them takes patience. Shooting them takes more. Some of the most common species we see are:

Trevallies: Giant Trevally and other various trevally species that patrol the reef edges. Aggressive, powerful, and very tasty.

Pelagics: Dogtooth Tuna, Spanish Mackerel, and Green Jobfish are rarities that can be found at dropoff and special spots in Amed.

Reef Species: Beautiful and rare table fare include species such as Coral Trout, Midnight Snapper, Maori Seaperch, Bigeye Seabream (Mu), and Red Seabass.

Unicorns: They’re incredibly rare, but Amed’s proximity to the Lombok Strait, combined with its fast-moving currents and steep drop-offs, sometimes attracts monsters like marlin and sailfish.

What a typical charter day looks like.

Before You Arrive

  • Eat a good breakfast. This is a full day on the water.
  • Bring sun protection: a rashguard or reef-safe sunscreen. You'll be exposed on the boat and in shallow water all day.
  • Let us know your spearfishing experience level and any medical conditions when you book.
  • If you have your own spearfishing gear, you're welcome to bring it. Just let us know in advance.
  • Avoid a heavy meal within 2 hours of the start time.

Your Day

7:00 | Meet Up

  • Car transportation is included. We'll confirm pickup logistics when you book.
  • Arrive at the boat, gear up, complete your waiver.

Safety and Hunting Briefing

  • Review spearfishing safety protocols, speargun handling, float line use, and targeting techniques specific to reef hunting.
  • Your instructor will brief you on target species, site selection, and dive approach for the day.

Reef Charter

  • Head out by boat to the day's reef sites around Amed.
  • Your instructor is in the water with you as your safety diver and hunting guide throughout the day.
  • Move between sites based on conditions, fish activity, and what you're hunting.
  • Underwater videography captured throughout the day.

End of Day

  • Return to shore with your catch.
  • Fish are cleaned and filleted.
  • Head to a local beachside restaurant in the evening. Your fish, cooked to your liking.

Common questions about the reef charter.

Do I need spearfishing experience to book this charter?

You should be comfortable in the ocean and have some breath-hold ability. Prior spearfishing experience is helpful but not required. If you've never held a speargun before, our Learn to Spearfish course is a better starting point: it covers the fundamentals and includes a guided charter as part of the day.

How deep are the reef dive sites?

The Amed reef varies. Shallow reef tops sit at 3 to 8 metres; the wall and deeper structure goes to 20 metres and beyond. Where we hunt depends on your experience level and the target species on the day. Your instructor will take you to the appropriate sites and depths for your ability.

What equipment do I need to bring?

All equipment is provided and included: speargun, float line, float, wetsuit, fins, mask, snorkel, weight belt, and weights. If you have your own spearfishing gear, you're welcome to bring it. Just let us know when you book.

Is reef spearfishing sustainable?

Done properly, yes. We operate on a strict eat-what-you-shoot principle: we only target species and sizes that are appropriate to take, and we don't shoot for sport. Selective spearfishing, by freedivers without scuba gear, is widely considered one of the most sustainable forms of fishing. We also avoid spawning aggregations and protected areas.

Can I keep the fish I catch?

Yes. All fish you catch belong to you. We'll have them cleaned and filleted, and you can arrange to have them cooked at a local restaurant that evening. Your catch, your meal.

What if conditions aren't right on the day?

We monitor conditions before every charter. If visibility is poor, swell is significant, or conditions would make for a genuinely bad experience, we'll contact you to reschedule at no cost. We won't run a charter in conditions that put anyone at risk.

Can I cancel or reschedule?

Yes. Please give us at least 48 hours notice if you need to change your booking. Cancellations within 24 hours of the charter start time may not be eligible for a full refund, as logistics and equipment are already in motion by that point. If you need to cancel due to illness or an emergency, reach out directly and we'll handle it on a case-by-case basis.

What should I ask any operator before booking?

A few things worth checking with any operator before you commit:

  • How many clients per instructor?
  • What certification does the instructor hold?
  • Are clients covered by third-party liability insurance for the duration of the activity?
  • Is the operator properly licensed to run commercial diving activities in Indonesia?
