Who is this course for?
You're already comfortable in the ocean. You can hold your breath, you're confident in open water, and you've decided it's time to learn how to spearfish properly.
We take this seriously. Spearfishing is an extreme sport, and we need to know you can handle yourself in open water before we hand you a gun.

Certified freedivers who want to add spearfishing to their skill set.

Self-taught spearos and strong snorkelers who are already in the water regularly and want to formalize their safety knowledge and tactics.

Certified scuba divers with solid breath-hold and equalization ability that want to transition into spearfishing.
Other confident ocean people who understand that putting a speargun in the hands of someone unprepared is dangerous, and want to do it properly.

People who want to learn real spearfishing, properly guided and safely taught.

What's in the water.
North Bali's FADs sit in deep, clear water with visibility that regularly hits 25–30 meters. Here's what you might find waiting at the FADs:

Mahi Mahi (Dorado): A prized pelagic catch around the world and spectacular on film.

Tuna: The trophy target. Catch one and you'll be talking about it for years.

Wahoo: Magnificent, shiny, torpedos. One of the fastest fish in the ocean. When they show up, it's a great day.

Rainbow Runners, Almacao Jack, Lesser Amberjack, Triple Tail, Cobia, Giant Trevally, Barracuda, Oceanic Triggerfish, and Filefish.

Unicorns: The FADs always have surprises. We've seen Marlin, Sailfish, Pilot Whales, Sperm Whales, Beaked Whales, Whale Sharks, and plenty of Dolphins!

Epic half day spearfishing and freediving. I've done a lot of spearfishing trips but the guide here is insanely knowledgeable. Before every spot he'd predict exactly what fish we'd see and where on the drift, and sure enough that's what happened. He put us onto wahoo, mahi, cobia and triple tail in a couple of hours, and he'd even turn down shots so I'd have the chance. Topped off with the catch cooked up at a local restaurant. I'll be back for more.

I took the spearfishing course with Aquatix and it was honestly one of the best experiences I've ever had. It wasn't just a 'go shoot fish' style. We covered freediving technique, safety, selective spearfishing awareness, and how to approach fish properly. The instructor focused a lot on being calm in the water and I never once felt rushed. A great mix of practical spearfishing knowledge and proper freediving fundamentals.

Booked a private 1 day spearfishing charter. The experience was completely tailored to my level with a strong focus on safety. They were incredibly helpful choosing the site and flexible on the day to pick the best conditions. I learned loads from the expert guide and finished the day a better diver and a better spearo. Best of all they organised dinner and had the day's catch cooked up. You won't go wrong with Aquatix.

Aquatix exceeded all expectations. The instructors combine exceptional local knowledge with a strong focus on safety, making every session both educational and enjoyable. Their understanding of the local reefs, conditions, and fish behaviour added tremendous value and helped maximise our time in the water. Professional, friendly, and genuinely invested in helping each student succeed. Highly recommend.

Highly recommended! These guys are experienced and professional. Put me on fish right away. Would recommend taking the spearfishing course if you've never done it before. It's the right amount of knowledge and confidence for the real deal.

I've hired this team many times over the past few years and the experience is always amazing. Super knowledgeable about local spots, really friendly, and very talented freedivers. They're also very patient instructors and I've learned so much every time. I would travel to Bali specifically to go spearfishing with them, it's that good.

Common questions about the spearfishing course.
Do I need experience to join this course?
Yes. This is not a beginner's course and we don't take people who are not yet confident in the ocean. You need to be a strong swimmer, comfortable in open water, and able to freedive without panicking. A Molchanovs Level 1 (or equivalent) freediving certification is strongly preferred.
If you're an experienced scuba diver, a very competent snorkeler with solid breath-hold ability, or you've been freediving without formal certification, reach out and describe your background. We assess suitability case by case.
If you're not yet confident in the ocean, we'd encourage you to complete our Level 1 Freediving Course first. It'll make you a significantly better spearo!
Am I guaranteed to shoot fish?
No. But what we can promise is that you will see fish. We will take you to spots that have plenty of fish. But whether you shoot these fish is up to your diving and hunting ability. This is why we make effort to best prepare you for spearfishing with activities like target practice beforehand.
However, after years of running these fishing trips, only on the rarest occasion does someone not shoot at least one fish during the day.
*** It should be noted that any commercial fishing operation that guarantees fish should probably not be trusted.
Do I need a freediving certification?
A Level 1 (or equivalent) freediving certification is strongly preferred and the easiest way to confirm you're ready for this course. It tells us you can equalize, freedive to a basic depth, and handle yourself safely in open water.
If you don't have a cert but you're an experienced scuba diver or strong snorkeler with solid breath-hold ability, message us with your background and we'll let you know honestly whether we think you're ready. We'd rather have that conversation upfront than find out on the boat.
Not there yet? Our Level 1 Freediving Course covers everything you'd need.
What equipment do I need to bring?
Nothing. All equipment is provided and included in the course price: speargun, float line, float, knife, gloves, wetsuit, fins, mask, snorkel, weight belt, and weights.
If you have your own spearfishing gear, you're welcome to bring it, just let us know when you book.
Can I take the course with more than 2 people?
The course has a maximum of two students per session for good reason. Spearfishing requires your instructor to be fully attentive to each student in the water, and more than two people makes that hard to do safely.
As a spearfishing guide, just one client is perfect. This provides the most intimate and controllable environment to learn spearfishing. Two clients is manageable and still very controllable.
Now imagine three or four students, all with loaded guns, all learning how to spearfish while drifting in the ocean. We feel that this is not responsible.
If you have a group larger than two, reach out and we'll see if we can make a custom arrangement.
Is spearfishing safe? I've never used a speargun before.
Spearfishing is safe when you know what you're doing, which is exactly why the first half of the course is dedicated to learning safety.
The theory session covers safety principles for spearos and how to handle a speargun on the boat, in the water, and around other people. By the time you pick up a gun for target practice, you'll know exactly how to use it properly. We've never had a safety incident on this course.
What fish will we target?
At the FADs in North Bali we typically encounter rainbow runners, almaco jack, and various other pelagic species depending on conditions and season. Your spearfishing instructor will brief you on what to look for on the day.
What if the conditions are bad on the day?
North Bali conditions are generally good for spearfishing for most of the year. If conditions are genuinely unsafe on the day you've booked, we'll contact you to reschedule at no cost. We won't take anyone out in conditions that compromise safety or make for a poor experience.
Can I cancel or reschedule?
Yes. We get it, plans change. Please give us as much notice as possible if you need to change the date of your booking.
Cancellations within 24 hours of the course start time may not be eligible for a full refund, as logistics and equipment are already prepared by that point. If a cancellation is made on short notice, we may opt to keep just your deposit, and we will refund the remaining cost of the course. We also keep this deposit to be counted toward your next booking with us.
Generally, we are very good at working with clients’ schedules and timing to make sure that everyone gets a chance to get in the water.
What should I ask any operator before booking?
A few things worth checking with any operator before you commit:
- How many clients per instructor?
- What certification does the instructor hold?
- What kind of safety precautions are made for vessels such as first aid kits and a spare engine?
- Are clients covered by third-party liability insurance for the duration of the activity?
- Is the operator properly licensed to run commercial diving activities in Indonesia?
We're happy to answer all of these. Just reach out.
