Bathymetry
The layout of this dive site is similar to the layout of most dive sites in Amed. A gradual shelf that slopes eastwards and flattens out at predictable sections. The first slope starts around 5 - 8 meters and finished around 22 meters. there is significant gorgonian fan growth and dense hard coral coverage. This is where the bulk of fish life.
Another slope starts to descend around 25 meters into the abyss. Large pelagic can be found roaming this deeper shelf.
There are several sandy holding Garden Eel colonies that emerge completely during slack water and disappear the moment current picks up.
Current is the defining variable here. An incoming tide brings good visibility and a manageable drift. The outgoing can be strong and requires experience to navigate safely.
When the Tide Turns
When the current is running on an incoming tide, Bunutan is arguably one of the most alive site on the Amed coast.
On a strong incoming tide the water column fills. Fusiliers on the surface, Barracuda in formation. Blacktip Sharks working deeper and small schools of Trevallies and Surgeonfish circling.
Before You Go
Talk to us about the tidal window before committing to Bunutan. Diving the wrong tide wastes the trip and can be genuinely challenging. This site works best for freedivers and spearos comfortable with drift conditions.
